When I was a young girl, probably about eight or nine years old, I noticed that many of the gifts and crafties my sisters and I received from our mother's mother were knitted. I was so fascinated by this crazy concept of taking two needles, adding some yarn, and voilà! A double-sided doll with multiple different detachable hats, aprons, and even pets. So I asked my mother to teach me how to knit.
At the beginning, of course, my stitches were all uneven, there were dropped and lost stitches everywhere resulting in large holes; the whole thing was just a mess! But after practising for a while, I finally got the hang of it, and my work began to look decent.
My first finished project was a scarf which I had knit for my best friend... it involved two different colours: burgundy and golden yellow, which I alternated in stripes to make a Gryffindor-themed scarf. It turned out beautifully, and I was very proud of my accomplishment. I had knit it on and off for several months, but it was a very simple design, with just straight knit stitch the entire way.
A couple of weeks ago, I was bored while on Christmas break from school (between graduating my undergrad and starting my Masters), and decided to use the extra yarn I still had left from making the scarf to make another simple project. This time, though, I strived to use a knitting pattern for the first time, to see if I could make something a little more complicated: a toque! I started it one evening, worked on it while watching TV, and finished it the next day. It was quite the quick project, but I was again quite proud of myself for 1) actually finishing the project so quickly, and 2) using both the knit and the purl stitch. I had done a 2x2 ribbing for the first time!
Nowadays, I have quite the busy schedule, but in my down time at home I like to explore the world of knitting a little more each time, amping up my skills library so I can eventually be that amazing aunt/mother/grandmother who is unbelievably talented at crafts. So I hope you enjoy my blog, I'll be posting again soon!
